Creating Your Own Experiences

“Write about something you’ve done or experienced.” This is some of the most common writing advice ever given. Usually starting in grade school. If most writers followed this advice their stories would be boring. Most of us have never been detectives, doctors or pirates. Nobody has seen dinosaurs or dragons.

As a storyteller, it is important to find new things to do and experience. These will provide new seeds for growing your stories. Start simply. Look around for activities or events that you think might provide an interesting story to tell. Check local websites and newspapers.

For example, one day by checking the local paper, I came across a traveling dinosaur skull exhibit. By going to the exhibit, I learned plenty of new information about dinosaurs. As a science fiction writer, an hour of my time gave me the following ideas:
1. What if dinosaurs came back?
2. How would things be if they come back?
3. What if somebody stole the skull?

Going to this exhibit also made me remember how interesting I used to find dinosaurs. This meant that I started looking for the latest science and information on them and this gave me even more ideas.

Hopefully, this post was interesting and helpful. Feel free to comment below.

Thanks for reading,
Lee
